ECG100: ECG-Guided PICC Tip Confirmation
An excerpt from the course material. No account or payment required.
Why tip location matters
The single most important determinant of safe central venous access is correct catheter tip position. The target for a PICC or CVAD is the lower third of the superior vena cava (SVC) at or near the cavoatrial junction (CAJ). A tip too high risks thrombosis and malposition; a tip in the right atrium risks arrhythmia and perforation. Intracavitary ECG (IC-ECG) lets the clinician confirm tip position in real time at the bedside, reducing the need for a confirmatory chest x-ray and allowing immediate adjustment before the procedure ends.
